Quick answer

Compare performance potential by weight

This calculator relates horsepower to vehicle weight so you can compare cars using hp per US ton and pounds per horsepower.

The method

US power-to-weight figures

Horsepower is divided by vehicle weight in US tons, and weight is also shown in pounds per horsepower.

Use a consistent curb or test weight.

Crank and wheel horsepower are not directly comparable.

Traction and gearing also affect acceleration.

Power to weight questions

Should I use curb weight or loaded weight?

Use the same weight definition for every vehicle you compare. Loaded or test weight is often more realistic than brochure weight.

Does power-to-weight predict acceleration exactly?

No. Traction, gearing, torque curve, aerodynamics and drivetrain losses also affect acceleration.
