Quick answer
Estimate EV charging time and cost
This calculator estimates the energy needed to move between two battery percentages, then applies charger power, efficiency and electricity price.
The method
How EV charging is estimated
Required battery energy is based on the percentage added. Grid energy includes charging losses, then time is energy divided by charger power.
The vehicle may accept less power than the charger supplies.
DC fast charging tapers near high state of charge.
Utility rates and session fees vary.
EV charging questions
Why is charging efficiency included?
Some energy is lost as heat or overhead while charging, so grid energy can be higher than the energy stored in the battery.
Will DC fast charging always use the charger rating?
No. Many EVs taper charging speed at higher battery levels or in cold conditions.
